MY STORY

Love at first carve

My linoprint story starts back in December 2019, celebrating Christmas with my family at my parent's house (think of it like an episode of the Royle Family, but with a conservatory...).

The grown ups do a secret santa every year, and this time around, Mother Christmas (aka, my mum) buys me a linoprint starter kit from EssDee.

A couple of week later, as New Year's Day 2020 rolls around, I'm making my way through my fifth box of Roses of the festive season and decide to unpack the new toy and have a play around.

After a couple of hours, I have my first linocut design carved and printed. And with that, i'm hooked!

Carving through Covid

A matter of months later, in March 2020, suddenly the world gets turned upside down. As the UK goes into lockdown, and I'm stuck miles way from my family in a city-centre flat, linoprint becomes a vital way for me to keep my hands busy and my mind occupied. Carving pictures into lino blocks becomes a form of meditation for me, and often feels like one of only things keeping me sane.

Fast forward a few years, and that passion for printmaking is still very much alive. I love the process, all the different steps that are involved, the physicality and mindfulness of it, the little nervous excitement when you pull your first print and you get to see how it's turned out. And most of all, I love that there's still so much for me to learn and improve and experiment with.

Inspiration and influences

My work is inspired by nature, mythology and folklore, celebrating how we use stories to make sense of the world around us. Early pieces featured modern interpretations of classical figures goddesses from Greek mythology, reimagined as 21st century women. Fairy tales, folk stories and witchcraft recur as motifs, with a strong undercurrent of feminism.

More recently, I've taken inspiration from the flora and fauna of the British Isles, and especially the incredible landscape of the Shropshire Hills, which I am lucky enough to call home. Alongside printmaking, I'm passionate about conservation, in particular rewilding, and what we can do to support and protect the amazing natural world we live in.

I currently work from my home studio. â€‹â€‹When I'm not printing, you'll most likely find me out exploring the hills with my partner and our beagle, Kubo, tackling house and garden renovation projects, or sampling what the cafes of Church Stretton have to offer.
