Medusa print
This limited edition original linocut print was inspired by Greek mythology and depicts the snake-haired Gorgon, Medusa. In the myth, the mere sight of Medusa could turn anyone who looked upon her to stone. She would eventually be defeated by Perseus, who went on to use her head as a weapon.
Whilst some tales of Medusa portrayed her as a hideous monster, others imagined her as a beatiful maiden, More recently, her tale has been reinterpreted to draw her as a feminist figure, taking fair revenge against those who silenced and abused her.
In this piece, I wanted Medusa to address the viewer directly, casually daring you to look at her. She sits casually, her nude form relaxed and her head resting on her hand, but her stare is unflinching - both a victim and a challenger of the male gaze.
